In most cases, cambelt and timing belt mean exactly the same thing. Different manufacturers and garages simply use different terms.

Unlike tyres or brakes, a cambelt usually doesn’t give obvious warning signs before it fails. That’s why understanding what it does — and when it should be replaced — is so important.
What does a cambelt do?
In simple terms, the cambelt (or timing belt) keeps the engine’s internal components moving in sync. It controls the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine valves open and close at the correct time while the pistons move up and down.
If the timing is even slightly out, the engine won’t run properly. If the cambelt fails completely, the internal components can collide with each other, causing severe engine damage.
In many vehicles, a snapped cambelt can result in bent valves, damaged pistons and, in some cases, complete engine failure. That’s why cambelt replacement is considered essential preventative maintenance rather than something to wait on until there’s a problem.
When should a cambelt be replaced?
Cambelt replacement intervals vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. Some manufacturers recommend replacement around every 40,000–60,000 miles, while others allow for longer intervals.
It’s not just mileage that matters either — age is important too. Even if a vehicle hasn’t covered many miles, the belt can still deteriorate over time due to heat, age and general wear. Many manufacturers recommend cambelt replacement every 5–10 years depending on the vehicle.
If you’re unsure when your cambelt or timing belt was last changed, it’s always better to get it checked rather than risk a failure.
Signs your cambelt may need attention
Unlike some vehicle problems, cambelts don’t always show obvious warning signs before failing. However, there are a few symptoms that can sometimes indicate wear or related issues.
- ticking noises coming from the engine
- difficulty starting the vehicle
- reduced engine performance
- vibrations or unusual engine behaviour
- visible wear or cracking on the belt
Even if you haven’t noticed any of these signs, an overdue cambelt can still fail suddenly and without warning.
Some drivers delay cambelt replacement because the vehicle still seems to be running normally, but replacing a cambelt as part of planned maintenance is far more affordable than repairing engine damage caused by a snapped belt.
On many vehicles, the water pump is also connected to the cambelt system. Because of this, it’s often recommended to replace the water pump at the same time to help avoid future labour costs and cooling system issues.
