Environmentally Friendly Trucks & Fuel

At Birway we are continuing to strive to reduce our environmental impact with the long-term objective to achieve Net Carbon Zero by 2039. We have recently invested in new Scania trucks that can be powered using gas or green biodiesel.
Our latest investment was the purchase of the ‘Scania P420 Super’, the manufacturers most advanced and efficient combustion-engine powertrain ever built. Through industry-leading emissions control and 8% fuel savings, the Scania Super sets the new standard for sustainable transport operations.
We are running the truck on HVO Fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) a fossil-free paraffinic diesel, meaning it can be used as a direct replacement for mineral diesel. Made from certified waste materials, HVO therefore supports the circular economy and helps to reduce net CO2 greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%. This investment in new technology also supports both Birway and our client’s commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.
Scania Gas Powered Trucks
Scania’s range of gas-powered trucks is highly adaptable, with great drivability, low fuel consumption, and a range of up to 1,700km. Gas powertrains are available with P/G/R/S-series cabs, meaning that they can be used for urban rigid operations, all the way through to long-distance haulage.
It’s no secret that transport is a major source of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions. But being a major source also comes with the ability to achieve major reductions: Natural Gas CNG/LNG can reduce CO₂ emissions by 15-20%, and Biogas CNG/LNG by an incredible 90%.
Noise pollution is reduced to, as gas engines typically run quieter than their diesel counterparts – with the 13-litre engine meeting the PIEK noise limitation standard.
Scania gas-powered trucks strike an excellent balance between fuel cost, low emissions, power and range. With a 9-litre engine for lighter urban operations, and a 13-litre engine suited to heavier loads, gas power is a viable option for a multitude of use-cases.
Whether using CNG/CBG or LNG/LBG, the fuel used is ultimately methane gas, so natural gas or biogas can be used interchangeably. LNG offers higher energy density than CNG, making it the preferred option for longer distance transport.
Scania gas engines are known for their fuel efficiency. An articulated truck with a gross weight of up to 40 tonnes can drive 500 kilometres without refuelling under favourable conditions. With twin fuel tanks on a rigid truck, the range is approximately 1,700 kilometres. With biogas in the tanks, CO2 reduction can be as much as 90 percent compared to a similar diesel engine.

CNG Fuels
CNG Fuels develops, owns, and operates CNG Refuelling infrastructure and sources 100% Renewable Biomethane (Bio- CNG) for its stations. They are currently the only UK supplier of publicly accessible 100% RTFO-approved Biomethane.
Their Bio-CNG is biomethane sourced from 100% renewable and sustainable waste feedstocks. This is independently verified and approved by the Department for Transport’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).
CNG Fuels’ supply of Bio-CNG from a waste feedstock is verified and approved by the Department for Transport on a monthly basis. They issue their customers with certificates stating that they have purchased sustainable, renewable Biomethane Fuel. The CO2 eq. Reduction can then be claimed on the company’s Corporate Accounts. During the last period CNG Fuels recorded a CO2 eq. saving of over 90% vs Diesel.
Benefits of CNG Fuels include:
- Significant GHG emissions savings – Adopting Bio-CNG fuel will contribute significantly to GHG emissions savings for the UK and help towards achieving emissions targets in 2030, 2040 and beyond.
- Safe & Simple Refuelling – The refuelling process is extremely simple with no diesel smell from spillage and no safety equipment required when refuelling.
- Emission Savings – Businesses are able to report emissions savings of more than 90% on a well-to- wheel basis for a Bio-CNG vehicle vs. Euro 6 Diesel equivalent.
- Noise Reduction – There is a proven noise reduction benefit of around 50% compared to running diesel vehicles. The added benefit from this is that drivers are reporting they come back less fatigued from their shifts.
- Greener Logistics – Demand for greener logistics has increased and switching from diesel to Bio-CNG will allow our customers to reach their transport decarbonisation goals.

HVO Fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
HVO, a sustainable fuel alternative, is derived from animal fats and/or vegetable oils, such as palm, rapeseed, and used cooking oil. This makes it fossil-free and capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to standard mineral-based diesel.
When refined to the EN15940 standard, HVO has a negligible impact on fuel consumption, while also improving particulate emissions levels.
Chemically similar to diesel, HVO offers excellent cold weather performance and can even be blended with diesel if desired. Furthermore, HVO can be used in any Euro 6 Scania diesel engine without requiring any modifications.
HVO fuel offers several key benefits:
- Reduced emissions: HVO fuel burns cleaner, resulting in lower emissions of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide compared to traditional diesel.
- Improved fuel efficiency: HVO fuel has a higher energy density, leading to improved fuel efficiency and extended driving range.
- Compatibility with existing diesel engines: HVO fuel can be used as a direct replacement for conventional diesel without requiring engine modifications.
- Renewable and sustainable: HVO is produced from renewable feedstocks, such as vegetable oils and animal fats, making it a more environmentally friendly fuel option.
- Cold weather performance: HVO fuel maintains its fluidity and performance even in cold weather conditions.
