As the temperatures rise and holiday plans fall into place, there’s nothing more frustrating than a car breakdown putting the brakes on your getaway. Whether you’re heading to the coast, the countryside, or catching a ferry to the continent, making sure your vehicle is road-trip ready is essential—especially in warmer weather, which can be tough on cars.
Here at Birway, we know that a few simple checks before you set off can save you time, money, and stress down the line. So, before you load up the boot and hit the road, take a few minutes to go through these summer car essentials.
Coolant levels
Your car’s engine works harder in hot weather, which means the cooling system is under extra pressure. Check your coolant (antifreeze) level and top up if needed. If you’re unsure, pop into Birway and we’ll be happy to take a look.
Tip: Never open the coolant reservoir when the engine is hot—wait until it’s cool to avoid injury.
Tyre condition and pressure
Long motorway journeys and high temperatures can cause tyres to wear faster or even fail. Before you set off:
- Check the tyre tread depth (at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre).
- Look for any cracks, bulges, or signs of wear.
- Inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure—don’t forget the spare!
If you’re carrying extra luggage or passengers, adjust the tyre pressures accordingly (check your vehicle manual for guidance).
Air conditioning
A working air con system isn’t just about comfort—it also helps demist windows and keep you alert behind the wheel. If your air conditioning isn’t as cold as it should be, it might be time for a re-gas or service, which we can carry out quickly at Birway.
Battery check
Car batteries are often more likely to fail in extreme heat. If your battery is over three years old or you’ve noticed sluggish starting, it’s worth having it tested before your journey.
Oil and other fluid levels
Engine oil helps keep things running smoothly, especially when it’s hot. Check the level using the dipstick, and top up with the correct oil type if needed. While you’re at it, inspect:
- Brake fluid
- Power steering fluid
- Windscreen washer fluid (and fill with summer screen wash for bug removal)
Wipers and screen wash
Summer bugs, dust, and glare from the sun can all reduce visibility. Make sure your windscreen wipers are in good condition and your screen wash is topped up with a formula that can tackle grime effectively.
Lights and indicators
Long daylight hours can mean we forget to check our lights—but if you’re driving early or late, fully functioning headlights, brake lights, and indicators are crucial. Do a quick check around the car to make sure everything’s working properly.
Emergency kit
Even with the best preparation, breakdowns can happen. Make sure your car is stocked with:
- A warning triangle
- Hi-vis jacket
- First aid kit
- Bottled water
- Phone charger/power bank
- Torch
And don’t forget your breakdown cover details!
