More than 194,000 new car registrations were seen in the UK last month as car sales rose for the 27th month in a row, in the UK during May, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Last month saw a total of 194,032 new car registrations, marking a 7.7% improvement in year-on-year terms. The result means that the industry sector has benefited from its longest ever period of sales growth.
Over the course of 2014 to date, the SMMT said 1,058,974 new cars have been sold, a figure 11.6% higher than that recorded between January and May of last year.
Improved business confidence led to growth in the sale of fleet cars, up 6.5pc year-on-year in May and by 9pc during January to May. Business car sales were particularly strong, up 26.8pc last month year-on-year and by 20.4pc in the first five months of the year.
The Ford Fiesta was yet again the best-selling model in May, followed by the Volkswagen Golf and the Vauxhall Corsa.
