Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road — so when they’re worn, damaged or underperforming, it affects everything from braking and handling to fuel economy and safety.

At Birway, we check tyres every day and we often find problems that drivers don’t realise are serious until it’s too late. The good news is: most tyre issues give you warning signs long before they become dangerous.

In this guide, we’ll run through how to tell if your tyres need replacing, when a puncture can be repaired, and how wheel alignment can help your tyres last longer.

Check your tyre tread depth

The easiest and most important check is tread depth. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around. But just because 1.6mm is legal doesn’t mean it’s ideal. Once tyres get low, your grip in wet conditions reduces quickly — and stopping distances increase. If you’re not sure how much tread you’ve got left, we can check it for you and advise whether your tyres are safe or nearing replacement.

Look for uneven tyre wear

Uneven wear is one of the biggest signs something isn’t right. Your tyre tread should wear down evenly across the surface. If you notice the inside edge wearing faster than the outside (or vice versa), it could be caused by:

    • incorrect wheel alignment
    • under-inflation or over-inflation
    • suspension wear

Driving on uneven tyres reduces grip and can lead to premature replacement. It’s also a common reason drivers end up buying tyres more often than they should. We can check tyre wear patterns and wheel alignment and help you get the most life out of your tyres.

Watch for cracks, bulges or damage

Even if your tread depth looks okay, tyres can still be unsafe due to age or damage. Look out for:

    • cracks in the sidewall
    • bulges (often caused by impact with kerbs or potholes)
    • cuts or splits in the rubber
    • embedded objects like nails or screws

If you spot a bulge, don’t take chances — that tyre should be replaced as soon as possible. Bulges can indicate internal damage and can lead to a blowout. If you’re unsure, bring your vehicle in and we’ll inspect your tyres properly and let you know what’s safe.

Your car feels different when driving

Tyre problems don’t always show up visually at first — sometimes you feel them before you see them. Signs to watch for include:

    • vibration through the steering wheel
    • pulling to one side
    • reduced grip in wet weather
    • the car feeling “floaty” or unstable

These can be signs of worn tyres, incorrect tyre pressures, wheel balancing issues or wheel alignment problems. At Birway, we can check the full setup — tyres, pressures, alignment and suspension — so you’re not guessing.

When can a puncture be repaired?

A puncture doesn’t always mean you need a new tyre — but it depends on where the damage is and how severe it is. In many cases, a puncture can be repaired if:

    • the hole is in the main tread area (not the sidewall)
    • the puncture is not too large
    • the tyre hasn’t been driven on while completely flat
    • the tyre is otherwise in good condition and has enough tread

However, if the puncture is in the sidewall, or the tyre has structural damage, the safest option is replacement.

Puncture repair tip: Don’t drive on a flat tyre
If you suspect a puncture, try not to keep driving. Even a short distance can damage the tyre internally and make it non-repairable. If you’re not sure, contact us and we’ll advise the safest next step.

How wheel alignment helps tyre life

Wheel alignment is one of the most overlooked parts of tyre care — and one of the biggest reasons tyres wear out early. If your wheels are even slightly out of alignment, your tyres can scrub against the road at the wrong angle. This causes:

    • uneven wear (especially on the inner or outer edges)
    • reduced tyre lifespan
    • poorer handling and stability
    • lower fuel efficiency

Alignment issues can happen gradually, but they’re often caused by kerbs, potholes or suspension wear. At Birway, we can check your wheel alignment and correct it — helping your tyres last longer and keeping your car safer to drive.

When should you replace your tyres?

As a general rule, we recommend getting your tyres checked if:

    • your tread is getting close to the legal limit
    • you’ve noticed uneven wear
    • there are cracks, bulges or damage
    • you’ve had repeat punctures
    • your car doesn’t feel stable or grippy

If you’re not sure, we’re happy to inspect your tyres and give you clear advice on what’s needed — whether that’s a puncture repair, a single replacement tyre, or a full set.
